Bali - Teaching Volunteer

Aims & Objectives

The aim of this project is to show students that learning English is fun and volunteers are encouraged to be creative with their methods of teaching - through games, songs, art, sport and music. If you are new to teaching, you may wish to team up with another volunteer, as 2-3 teachers in the classroom often works well with regard to confidence building and gaining greater control of the class whose enthusiasm often spills over into great excitement! Your role is to encourage and inspire, but most importantly for teachers and students alike to enjoy the experience.

Striving to achieve the infectious enthusiasm of good teachers, we aim to:
- Ignite the fuse of lifelong learning
- Enthusiastically encourage and inspire children
- Ensure each child is confident and articulate in both spoken and written English
- Teach games and songs, showing that learning can be fun
- Design creative methods of teaching and make effective lesson plans
- Most importantly for teacher and students alike to enjoy the experience.

Weekly Schedule & Activities

Please note that the volunteer activities and schedule can change at any time based on the needs of the project, local conditions, the weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Evenings & Weekends
During the evenings the volunteers are generally free, and there are no program activities scheduled unless otherwise mentioned. Weekends are always free.

Introduction Week

This program includes an Introduction Week which is packed full of exciting adventures, cultural excursions and interactions. Indonesia is one of most interesting countries in the world for cultural learning and experiences. Bali is renowned for its diverse and sophisticated art forms, such as painting, sculpture, woodcarving, handicrafts and performing arts.

During the Introduction Week you will be participating in various activities and will get acquainted with the Balinese culture, study the Balinese language and explore Ubud including the famous Monkey Street as well as the beautiful surrounding areas. During this week you will experience a traditional Balinese show and challenge your artistic and creative side through traditional Batik Painting and also try out your skills as a cook with a traditional Balinese cooking class. Finally, you will make a traditional flower offering and offer your creation at one of the most impressive Balinese temples: The Holy Tirta Empul Temple. We take a short spiritual tour around this famous temple, bathe in holy waters and pray for good luck. Evenings during the introduction week and the weekend after are free unless otherwise mentioned.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Lokaal vervoer

Arrival Information
We only receive participants on the Sunday before the program begins. The pick-up time from Denpasar Airport is between 06:00 and 20:00. After passing through customs, make sure you stay on the same floor and follow the way to the arrival gate (walking through the duty free shop). Our representative will be waiting for you at the International Arrival Flight Information Center. Please look for your name board. You may need to wait for several participants to arrive before the group leaves the airport.

If you're traveling to Denpasar Bali overland, we can arrange a pick-up at the following meeting points:
- Bintang Supermarket in Ubud at 14:00 on Sundays (Address: Jl. Raya Sanggingan No.45 Ubud, Bali 80515, Indonesia)
- Make your own way to Denpasar Airport at 14:00 on the Sunday before your program starts. Meeting point is at the international arrivals flight information center.

We highly recommend buying a cheap local SIM card for your stay in Indonesia for your own personal safety and for easier/cheaper communication with the staff/other participants/international calls. A SIM card is especially useful if you are traveling to the project on your own.

Early Arrivals
If you arrive much earlier than the pick-up window, you can choose to:

Request extra accommodation and pick-up from us at an additional cost
OR
Accommodate yourself until you can meet your coordinator at a meeting point.

Late Arrivals
We strongly discourage arriving after your pick-up window, as it may take longer for you to settle into your program. But if unavoidable, you must either:

Make your own way to us
OR
Request a special pick-up at an extra cost.

REMEMBER: In any case, let us know your plans. You must also inform us of any flight changes or emergencies as soon as possible.
Transfer Coordinator: +62 (0) 821 446 34202

Departure Information
Please be aware that you have to check out on the Saturday morning after the program. We do not offer airport drops on completion of the program due to the many different personal plans and return flight times and so participants need to make their own way to the airport. Our coordinator can help you with the different transportation options, but you will have to cover the cost.

Please make sure you are prepared to pay the country tax of 150,000 IDR when leaving Indonesia. This departure tax applies to everyone leaving the country.

Getting to the Project
To get to your project location, you can either share a taxi if the distance is long, or walk if the distance is manageable on foot.

Maaltijden

3 meals during weekday are provided (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and 2 meals during the weekend (breakfast, dinner).

Indonesian food is tasty and diverse and you can expect to experience a myriad of flavors and meals during their stay. Typical dishes included mie goreng (fried noodles and vegetables), nasi goreng (fried rice and vegetables) or gado gado (mixed vegetables with a satay sauce). For those who do not eat meat, Indonesian cooking uses a lot of tofu and tempeh (soybeans), we also provide for some of western dishes. Breakfasts are varied and include pancakes, fresh fruit, toast etc. Tea, coffee and purified water is available at the house. We do not recommend that you drink the tap water.

Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or intolerances during your application. However, we need to stress the point that you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but also as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible and accommodating to the local food.

Please note all meals are served at the Green Lion Centre in buffet style.
