Wat is inbegrepen?
The project is run as a weekly curricular activity for disadvantaged youth from one of the local schools. Our main goal is to keep the children occupied and off the streets after school. Volunteers help us teach them valuable life lessons through adventure activities, teamwork, educational classes and sports such as skateboarding, swimming and surfing. For most of the children, this is the highlight of their day which is why we also use it as an incentive for them to do well in school, giving them a better chance at a brighter future. Those that turn up for school every day, behave themselves in class and study hard will rewarded by going skateboarding, swimming or surfing after school.
Due to lack of funding there is very little physical education provided to the children in the preschools and primary schools, this can create physical and mental developmental issues.
For this reason, in the mornings we assist Educare Centers/kindergartens in the local township by providing fun games and lessons to children from the age of 1 to 6 years old.
In the afternoons we work with children from the age of 10 to 14 years old, developing important skills and teaching valuable life lessons through adventure activities. Most of these children can speak English, yet their home language may be Afrikaans or Xhosa. This is a very important part of the program as alcohol and drug abuse is common in the townships where they live, and at this age they are especially susceptible to recruitment by local gangs.
Due to Covid, the children have not been able to attend their swimming lessons, they first need to learn to swim before they will be allowed into the sea for surf lessons, this will be the focus along with skateboarding and field sports.
