They were repeatedly tortured and coerced into naming family members and close associates, who were in turn arrested, brought to S21, tortured and eventually killed. In 1979, the prison was uncovered by the invading Vietnamese army who toppled the Khmer Rouge and its leader, Pol Pot. In 1980, the prison was reopened by the government of the People's Republic of Kampuchea as a historical museum.
The Killing Fields is the name given to numerous burial sites in Cambodia where huge numbers of people were killed and buried by the infamous Khmer Rouge regime between 1975 and 1979. Over 20,000 mass grave sites have been found across Cambodia, estimates place the number of dead between 2 and 4 million. Many of these deaths were as a result of the Khmer Rouge policies that resulted in the disease and starvation of much of its population.
