Go on a boat trip through the awe-inspiring Sumidero Canyon, visit the colonial towns of Chiapa de Corzo and San Cristobal, learn about indigenous communities’ lifestyles, marvel at the wonderful Agua Azul waterfalls, and explore the magnificent pyramids of Palenque, Bonampak and Yaxchilan deep into the jungle. Transfer to Villahermosa for your flight back to Mexico City.
Day by Day Itinerary:
Day 1 - Mexico City - Flight to Tuxtla Gutierrez - Sumidero Canyon - San Cristobal de las Casas
Take a flight from Mexico City to Tuxtla Gutierrez. Travel to the delightful 'pueblo magico' of Chiapa de Corzo and take a 2-hour boat ride through the stunning Sumidero Canyon. If you are lucky you may see local wildlife such as crocodiles, monkeys and birds and a great variety of plants and trees. Your guide will point out fascinating geological formations within the canyon. Go to San Cristobal de las Casas in the afternoon, check in at the hostel and enjoy its cobblestone streets and cozy cafes.
Day 2 - Indigenous Communities Day Tour
Get to know the fascinating lifestyle of natives by visiting the indigenous villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan on a day trip with a local guide. Visit the local church and marketplaces where you will be overwhelmed by an explosion of color and life.
Day 3 - Day Trip to Agua Azul, Misol-Ha & Palenque
Depart from San Cristobal early in the morning for a fantastic day trip. This tour will take you to the fascinating archaeological site of Palenque, set deep in the jungle, as well as to two breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls; Agua Azul, famous for its translucent blue waters, and Misol-Ha where you can take a refreshing dip. End the day in Palenque.
Day 4 - 2D/1N Trip to Yaxchilan and Bonampak (B/L/D)
Immerse yourself deep in the Lacandon jungle on a 2-day trip to see the impressive Yaxchilan and Bonampak archaeological sites, which are only accessible by boat. These remote and mystical archaeological sites are both unique for their architecture, history, murals, engravings and lintels. Learn the local Mayan way of life by visiting an indigenous community and experiencing the traditions and customs first-hand. Spend the night in a rustic camp or cabins at the Lacanja Community.
Day 5 - 2D/1N Trip to Yaxchilan and Bonampak (B/L)
Go for a jungle walk in Lacanja and swim in one of many refreshing streams in the morning, before taking your return transfer to Palenque.
Day 6 - Transfer from Palenque to Villahermosa & Flight to Mexico City
Take a transfer from Palenque to Villahermosa then a flight back to Mexico City.
- For the Sumidero Canyon boat ride: Bamba recommends you to take a hat and use sunscreen as you will be on a boat cruising through the immense walls of this amazing canyon. Do not worry about wearing your swimsuit as swimming is not allowed (due to the crocodiles!).
- Suggested Packing List for the jungle: Please remember to bring a long-sleeve shirt, long pants, insect repellent, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sunhat.
