The bright red sun slowly rises over the magnificent temples of Angkor, and the impression is forever imprinted in your memory. The Cardamom Mountains are as beautiful and striking as their name, and the rural life and untouched nature takes your breath away. Just for a moment. Maybe the bicycle ride through pepper country does the same? Or the bustling street life and creative vibe in Phnom Penh? – A city in fast-forward development, but still slow in the backstreets.
You will explore all of this, and then some, as you do a loop from Bangkok through Cambodia and back into Trat – the gateway to Koh Chang Marine Park and Thailand's beautiful beaches. On your journey you will go by local transport and stay at handpicked accommodations with character and soul. You will lay eyes on Cambodia beyond the beaten track intertwined with the classic highlights – but with a twist so you avoid the crowds.

Reisroute

Cambodia Loop - 10 Days - Bangkok to Trat - Backpackit

Day 1: Bangkok (Thailand) – Information, inspiration and time to explore the city Upon arrival in Bangkok, check-in to New Road Guest House.

Get information and inspiration from the Travel Advisors about your Cambodian Loop, explore the city, hangout and meet other travellers.

Accommodation: New Road Guest House in Dorm Air-Con room with shared bathroom.

Day 2: Bangkok to Siem Reap (Cambodia) – Flow overland from Bangkok, cross the border to Cambodia and hangout in Siem Reap by night Prepare to leave Thailand behind and be awestruck by the wonder of Angkor Wat and the charming Cambodian countryside.

Your bus departs from Mo Chit Northern Bus Station in Bangkok around 09:00 in the morning. It's a 4-5 hours drive to the border, where you will stamp out of Thailand and into Cambodia. Once all practicalities are settled, your journey proceeds through the countryside of Cambodia and you will arrive in Siem Reap around 17:00.*
Upon arrival you will meet our local representative who will take you to your hostel for the days ahead. The rest of the evening is free for you to explore the new city. Take a dip in the hostel pool, get a massage to decompress after a long day of traveling and have a stroll and dinner in the bustling Old Market and Pub Street areas.

Meals: Simple lunch on the bus (but we recommend that you bring snacks and water still)
Accommodation: Dorm bed at White Rabbit Hostel (or similar)

Day 3: Siem Reap – Explore the marvellous temples of Angkor from sunrise to sunset Depart at 5:30 in the morning for sunrise at the temples of Angkor in Tuk Tuks.

Arriving at the mystical Srah Sarong or "King's Bath" at around 6am, just in time to see the sun rise over the water and temples. After sunrise, walk across the road and be first at the fabulous jungle temple of Ta Phrom when it opens. Ta Phrom is particularly amazing in the early morning when all you can hear are the sounds of the jungle, before the crowds arrive.
The Angkor Archaeological Park is visually, architecturally and artistically breath taking and one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia if not the world. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, the park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. You could spend weeks exploring the ruins, but on this day tour, you will have a chance to see all the highlights.
After Ta Phrom, you will visit the South Gate of Angkor Thom where you can take a quiet optional 1km walk along the wall and through the jungle to a hidden temple to enjoy your packed breakfast (on own arrangement). Then visit the temples of Bayon, Baphoun and Terrace of Elephants and Leper King. Take a break with a local lunch within and cold drinks within the park grounds (on own arrangement). After lunch and an optional siesta, you will visit Angkor Wat. The late afternoon is put aside for a visit to the main temple, Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat is one of mankind's greatest achievements, and the intricate carvings at the temple of Angkor Wat demonstrate the skill of the Khmer builders. It had constructed in the jungle in the early 12th century, then - two centuries later - was mysteriously abandoned by the Khmer civilization. Now Angkor Wat is the main reason tourists come to visit Cambodia.
Finish the day with an unforgettable sunset on the quiet east side of Angkor Wat.

Accommodation: Dorm bed at Dorm bed at White Rabbit Hostel (or similar)

Day 4: Siem Reap – Bike through the countryside and experience the local side of Cambodia Today you will bike through the surrounding countryside to prepare a local Khmer meal to offer to the monks.

Buddhist monks live away from their families and are not allowed to have normal jobs. They depend on the faith and charity of the local people. After a bike just outside of Siem Reap we will meet our chef from the village who takes us grocery shopping at a local food market. Maybe the chef will recommend that you to learn to cook the popular dish Amok, a fish soup, or Somlor Korko. After you have finished your Khmer cooking, the chef and his wife show you how to pack the meal and some rice into a banana leaf. A short walk takes us to the pagoda where the monks live so you can hand them the alms. Most likely the monk will give you a blessing and you can ask him everything you like to know regarding Cambodian culture and Buddhism. After you have given alms and eaten lunch in a local Cambodian home, you will bike back to your hotel.

Meals: Lunch
Accommodation: Dorm bed at White Rabbit Hostel (or similar)

Day 5: Siem Reap to Phnom Penh – Go by public bus overland and arrive in Phnom Penh for an afternoon exploration of the city At 7:45 AM, leave Siem Reap behind by local bus and head for Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh.

Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel or guesthouse to check-in and freshen up.
In the afternoon, around 2 PM, you will depart with your local guide on a walking tour through the heart of Phnom Penh. First briefly stop at the Friends N' Stuff to have look at the shop of the local NGO Mith Samlanh, a fine project that trains local street children and at risk youth in hospitality and business. Continue through Psar Kandal, the oldest market in Phnom Penh stopping for local snacks along the way, while observing the busy street life of urban Cambodia. Go by foot to Phnom Penh's old French Quarter with its fine colonial era architecture – proudly restored or beautifully decaying. And to Wat Phnom, a sacred and quiet pocket in the busy city, and the Buddhist temple that has given Phnom Penh its name.
Continue by tuk tuk to Tuol Sleng Prison, housed in a high school, to glimpse the devastating horrors that prevailed during Cambodia's ultra-radical Marxist movement. This excursion may prove distressing for some; it is however an important piece of Cambodia's recent past.
After visiting Toul Sleng, you will be dropped off at your hotel and have the evening free at your convenience.

Accommodation: The Penh or Artist Guesthouse in standard room

Day 6: Phnom Penh to Kep – Overland transfer and time to put down your backpack and discover the laidback and local coastal town Depart at 9:30 AM on a two and a half hour journey to the coastal town of Kep.

Upon arrival in Kep, you will be transferred to your guesthouse and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Explore this quaint town littered with abandoned colonial villas and surrounded by pristine jungles and small islands and beaches.

We would recommend dinner tonight at the world famous crab market.

Accommodation: Reaksmey Krong Kep Guesthouse in standard room

Day 7: Kep – Morning bicycling in the countryside amongst rice fields and orchards with mountains in the background Your driver will pick you up from your guesthouse at 7:30 AM to start your bike trip.

This sleepy hamlet was once the administration centre for the area during the French era and the town is dotted with buildings from the Colonial past. Your bicycles and your English-speaking community guide will be waiting for you. Your bike ride will take you through rice fields, durian and rambutan orchards against the scenic backdrop of the mysterious ??Elephant Mountains'. Stop at local villages along the way to meet and speak with the local people. Your guide will help translate and if you are feeling adventurous try out a few words in Khmer!
Return to you hotel or guesthouse in the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset.

Accommodation: Reaksmey Krong Kep Guesthouse in standard room

Day 8: Kep to Chiphat – Travel overland and by boat to the Chi Phat community

Leave Kep around 08:00 AM and drive to Andong Teuk, a small settlement on the Stoeng Prat River. Due to the limited public transport in the area, you will go by private car with driver, and can make short stop(s) on the way. The drive will take approximately 4 hours.
In Andong Teuk you will board a local boat with your guide and cruise on to Chiphat for a couple of hours. Enjoy the relaxing boat ride; watch the birdlife flying over the river.
The Chi Phat experience is run by one of the world's leading Wildlife organizations working with the local people and helping them with an income and protecting the forest. Your local guide was born in the community and is an expert of the local area. His English may not be of the same standard as in Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, but the locals are able to communicate in English, wonderful people, and the best to show you the area.

Meal: Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation: Sun Bear Bungalows in standard bungalow
Please Note: The Chi Phat experience doesn't have conventional lunch & dinner times, so it is advised to bring some snacks. If you have binoculars and good walking shoes, this is advisable to bring, too.

Day 9: Chi Phat – Start early with a sunrise tour, cruise the remote rivers to get close to wildlife, and walk to the Chhay Chrey rapids Get up and close with the eagles, hornbills and numerous other birds on a sunrise tour.

Take in the sights and sounds of wildlife as you explore this remote area of Cambodia.
Your boat driver will take you through the nature of the clam river where you will get close to the Cardamom's tropical rainforest and have opportunity to see birds and critters. And you will be taken on the Chi Pat River in a traditional rowing boat. The waterways are home to an abundance of flora and fauna including silver langur, long tailed macaque, giant and oriental pied hornbill, kingfisher and drongos.
In the afternoon you will walk to the Chhay Chrey rapids. This is an easy 2 kms walk. Have a swim and enjoy the quiet surroundings. After an hour you will be picked up by motorbike taxi (helmet provided) and transfer back to the Chi Phat for dinner.

Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Accommodation: Sun Bear Bungalow in standard bungalow

Day 10: Chi Phat to Trat (Thailand) – Say goodbye to the Cardamom Mountains and head towards Trat.

Your gateway to Koh Chang and Koh Kood islands.

After breakfast, around 07:00, you will say goodbye to the villagers and depart to the Thai border at Koh Kong by boat followed by private car/mini bus. Expect the entire journey to take approx. 3-4 hours. Upon arrival at the border, you will stamp out of Cambodia and into Thailand. It may take up to one hour to complete. Once at the Thai side, you will be welcomed by your local representative and continue on your journey to Trat bus station. Expected driving time is 1-1,5 hours.
You can end the trip at either Trat Bus Station, Laem Sok Pier (Gateway to Koh Kood Island) or Laem Ngop (Gateway to Koh Chang Island).

??WHAT TO DO AFTER TRAT? Trat is your gateway to Koh Chang Marine Park including Koh Kood and Koh Mak islands. We can help you with boat transfer and accommodation on all islands, and have something for your budget. Please contact us and we can inspire or organise your onwards journey.
You can also choose to continue to Bangkok by flight or local bus. If you choose flight, Trat airport is just half an hour by taxi away, and we recommend that you book your flight tickets in advance via Bangkok Air. If you choose overland transport, public busses leave from Trat bus station roughly every hour, and you can normally buy the ticket directly at the spot. If you go by private transport (approx. 5-6 hours), we can help you organise in advance. Just contact us, and we will empty our backpack of knowledge into yours.

* Important information for your Bangkok - Siem Reap journey:
Feel free to come by our Bangkok Travel Center at New Road Guest House to get further information on your departure from Mo Chit Northern Bus Terminal and what to be aware of.
We recommend that you allow good travel time to get to Mo Chit Bus Station in the morning, and arrive there at least 30-45 minutes in advance. You can grab snacks if needed from the local shops or 7/11. The bus normally leaves from platform 106, but please check upon arrival.
Once you arrive at the border, you will leave the bus, and you might have people approaching you with currency exchange offers and visa help (not recommended), just as waiting time must be expected. You will first reach the Thai immigration where you stamp out of Thailand, then cross into Cambodia. If you do not have your Cambodian visa in advance, remember to bring money for the visa and 2 passport photos.
After getting your Cambodia stamp walk back to "No man's land" and the bus will be waiting outside the casino, which is opposite the True Coffee shop. You will have to wait until everyone is back on the bus and then it continues to Siem Reap. This is the normal process, but please follow the guidelines from the bus conductor on the day.
