Your project starts with an introduction day on the first Monday including a tour of the area surrounding the accommodation, available facilities, cultural "do's and don'ts", safety concerns as well as some basic local language lessons.
Monday to Friday
On your first project day you will have a meeting with the project coordinator to plan your lessons in more detail. You will also meet with the school principals to introduce yourself. You will be working with basic classroom facilities, such as blackboards and whiteboards, which is why we encourage volunteers to be creative.
The working hours are from around 08:00 until 17:00, with a lunch break at the accommodation around 11:00. The program runs from Monday to Friday, but every last Thursday of the month is a day off as all the teachers have a monthly meeting they must attend. The volunteer will attend schools which are extremely poor and are situated in the rural area. Be therefore prepared to start early and return late, as the medical outposts can be quite far away from where you will be staying, and the roads in Cambodia are badly maintained, especially in this part of the country.
We aim to maintain a flexible program, which means that your schedule can include a combination of activities that will be matched with your skills and experience as well as the local situation and current needs. We advise volunteers to come prepared with topics such as:
Sanitation (basic hygiene such as washing hands, brushing teeth etc.)
Please note that the volunteer activities and schedule can change at any time based on the needs of the project, local conditions, the weather and unforeseen circumstances.
Evenings & Weekends
During the evenings the volunteers are generally free, and there are no program activities scheduled unless otherwise mentioned. Weekends are always free. Relax at your homestay accommodation, take a bicycle into town, or expand your sightseeing and visit the many sites in the Oddar Meanchey province, or take a taxi to Siem Reap for the weekend. Our friendly staff are always there to make your choice easier with advice.
