Mandela's Soweto Kids

Project Highlights

- Engage with children and youth education and after school activities.
- Assist a local primary school with basic computer skills, life skill subjects, creative arts and performing arts.
- Take part in the nutritionist program of the primary school by assisting in the school’s feeding scheme and assist building and maintaining a vegetable garden project for food security.
- Assist in programs for a meaningful spare time after school - this is done both through the government funded after school program including sports and homework assistance as well with the local Youth club with activities including arts, dance, reading and games.
- Plan, run and execute a project with the children and the local Youth Club leader such as a “mini festival”, “Fun Day”, Carnival, educational trips etc.
- Volunteering in Soweto offers an unique opportunity to stay in a vibrant township rich in history.

Weekly Schedule & Activities

These are the tasks and duties you can expect. The project is open Monday-Friday 08:00-16:00.

Primary School:
Volunteers participate in the daily schedule of the school with different mixed classes of 6-13-year-old boys and girls. Specific focus will be put on:
- Basic computer literacy in the school’s computer lab for grades 3-4
- Participating and educating learners in life skill subjects such as creative arts and performing arts. Volunteers will also have a theme day where they can talk about their own country and culture.
- Participating and assisting in the school kitchen where meals are prepared for all learners. The school also has a wish to run their own garden project to make sure they always have access to fresh vegetables and fruits. This will ensure food security and teach the children how to grow their own vegetables therefore making the project sustainable.

Expanded Support System:
This is a government funded after school program which includes sports practice in soccer, netball and volleyball as well as home work assistance. The volunteer will assist in these activities with a special focus on the home work tutoring.

The Youth Club:
Volunteers participate in the club’s activities 2 times a week with children from the age of 6 up to teenagers. Plan and execute activities with the local youth club leader with a focus on arts and culture activities such as:
- Drawing and painting
- Poems and story telling
- Dance and theatre
Volunteers will also be expected to participate in sports and leisure game activities as well as take part whenever there is a "greening activity" such as tree planting or a clean-up campaign etc.

Children’s Event Project:
Volunteers could, together with the local youth club leader, plan and execute a bigger event for the children.

Is There a Potential Risk?

The work itself is not dangerous, but care is required when working in a Township environment. Generally, HIV/AIDS is extremely prevalent in South Africa, so it is your personal responsibility to take care with regards to health and safety, as well as sexual relationships.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.
